We’ll run you through the basics of making your selection, to help you pick out the perfect instrument for you.

Acoustic or Digital?

This will be the first factor you need to consider, and a lot will depend on what sound and type of music is your own personal preference. Those who prefer classical music and traditional rock and roll might feel a traditional, acoustic piano is more suited to them. Digital pianos have, however, come on in leaps and bounds since the tinny synthesisers of the 1980s. For those on a tight budget, a second hand digital piano would be a great buy bearing in mind its compact size and economical cost. Some key features to look for is that the piano features the standard three pedals as well as the 88 keys along with a weighted hammer system. Most jazz and classical music is specially written to encompass almost the entirety of the instrument’s range. So, if you’re looking to play these musical genres, this is the standard you’ll be looking for at leasts. Classical music purists, however would argue that digital pianos still can’t quite achieve the sound of the acoustic models. Acustic models on the market today fall into two distinct categories: grand pianos and upright pianos. Upright pianos are great for those short on space and also tend to be more economical too. Grand pianos tend to be very large and more costly, but give that wonderful, inimitable quality sought after by the top orchestras and concert halls the world. With it’s timeless sound, the grand piano gives a rich, decadent sound that could never, ever go out of style.

Used Pianos

Digital pianos have several key benefits. As already mentioned, they take up far less space than even upright acoustic models, making them perfect for the modern home where freespace can be at a premium. Additionally, they represent great value for money. With a digital piano, maintenance costs are drastically reduced. The need for regular tuning is eliminated. Digital pianos feature some amazing functions to give neat sound effects. Possibly one of the greatest pluses of digital pianos is their versatility. Many models are designed for use with your pc. Even with the most basic set up, with the right music software you can set up a home studio allowing you to record, edit and burn your work to disk. Looking back at the music industry over the last twenty, even ten years, it’s hard to believe that professional recording studio results are so easily attainable from the comfort of your own home at a fraction of the price.

When playing the piano, posture is very important. If you opt for a digital version, you will need to invest in a piano bench if one isn’t included. Adjustable piano benches are a great innovation, allowing you to set your piano at the optimum height for you and reducing risk of strain to your back when playing. Good posture is vital, reducing wear and tear on not just the obvious area of the lower back, but also minimising stress to your shoulders, torso, arms and upper body.

Whether you opt for a digital piano or acustic piano, you need to take good care of your instrument. You shouldn’t ideally keep your peano in drafty spots, nor should you expose it to strong, direct sunlight. This is particularly important with acustic models, as strong sunlight will damage the wooden parts of the piano, causing fading externally but also internal damage to parts such as the wooden soundboards. Ideally, you should keep your piano in an area which has a stable temperature of 15 to 21 degrees. Keeping it next to a radiator is a pretty big no no. Acoustic pianos need regular tuning, of perhaps twice a year on average – more if you play a lot or if the piano is kept in an area with extremes of heat, cold or humidity.
